Production Principles: Sound

The first piece I’ve done was to record and capture the sounds that you hear from inside and outside places. What I did was recorded my journey from the university back to my home on the train in different shots capturing each part for a few seconds. It was advised to make the video 20 seconds long, but with the amount of shots and how I wanted different sounds to be longer than others, the video ended up being double the size. It was really interesting to listen back on the sounds I’ve captured from inside noise of chatter and train wheels to outside noise of cars and megaphone which creating the ambience of moving from one place to the other smoothly.
The next piece was to create unusual and interesting audio using 5 different objects around my house. I was planning to create some rhythmic sounding audio, however, I settled with the simple idea of recording sounds which might be obvious or a stranger to the listener’s ear. Diverging from my original plan, it was quite fun discovering sounds that could be useful to utilise in animation. I would discuss which sound is which, but as said, I thought I would be fun to figure out for yourself.
For this last piece in the week, the task was to create 3 mini films in one based on the sounds in different environments. Using some sketches I’ve drawn in another task I’ve done at the beginning of the week where I created two onomatopoeia drawings of what sounds looks like outside and inside the campus, I’ve decided to create a third one based on a meadow/open field close to where I live as well as using the audio of sounds from the previous recordings and capturing new audio from my walks back at home. For this, I wanted to focus on the ambience of these different locations instead of including music of my own which was advised, solely because I don’t think I can make music good enough to fit each theme of the drawings shown in this film.
